Gas Line Installation & Repair in the SC Midlands
Licensed, code-compliant gas line work for homes in Irmo, Chapin, Lexington, Columbia, West Columbia & Cayce. Permits pulled, every job pressure-tested.
Safe, Code-Compliant Gas Line Work Across the Midlands
Gas lines are not a DIY project. A leak from a poorly installed or aging line can cause fire, explosion, or carbon monoxide exposure. Conner Plumbing of the Midlands installs, repairs, extends, and tests natural gas and propane lines for homeowners across Irmo, Chapin, Lexington, Columbia, West Columbia, and Cayce. Every job is performed by a licensed South Carolina plumber, pulled with the proper permits, and pressure-tested before we leave the site.
We’ve been the trusted plumbers across the Columbia metro since 2016, and we treat every gas line job — from a simple stove hookup to a full house repipe — with the same level of care.

Gas Line Services We Offer
New gas line installation
Adding a new gas appliance — range, dryer, water heater, fireplace, outdoor grill, generator, or pool heater? We size and run the line, install the shutoffs, pressure test, and coordinate inspection. Upgrading to a tankless water heater almost always means a larger gas line — we handle that as one combined job.
Gas line extensions
Already have gas service but need to extend it to a new room or appliance. We tap the existing line and run new black iron, CSST, or polyethylene to the new fixture.
Gas line repair
Aging or corroded lines, damaged sections from yard work, or leaks at threaded connections — repaired and pressure-tested.
Gas leak detection
Electronic combustible-gas detectors and bubble testing at every joint. We pinpoint the leak and resolve it. Smelling gas right now? Get out of the house first, then call our 24/7 emergency plumbing line.
Pressure testing
Required by code on any new or modified gas line in the Midlands. We perform the test and call for inspection.
Outdoor gas runs
Generators, grills, pool/spa heaters, fire pits — we run gas lines underground from the meter to the appliance.
Appliance hookups
Range, dryer, water heater (see our water heater installation page), tankless heater, furnace, fireplace insert.

Signs You Have a Gas Leak
Leave the house first, then call. If you smell gas (rotten egg / sulfur), hear hissing near a gas line or appliance, see dead grass over a buried line, or notice flames burning yellow instead of blue, treat it as a leak.
Immediate steps:
- Don’t operate any electrical switches — including light switches and garage door openers
- Don’t light anything (matches, lighters, stove)
- Get everyone out of the house
- From outside, call your gas utility (Dominion Energy SC: 1-800-815-0083)
- Then call Conner Plumbing at (803) 239-7432 — once the utility has shut off the supply, we can locate and repair the leak
Our Gas Line Installation Process
- Free in-home estimate. A licensed Conner technician comes out, evaluates the existing service, sizes the new line based on the appliance BTU load and the distance from the meter, and recommends materials.
- Permits and code compliance. Gas line work in Lexington and Richland counties requires permits. We pull every permit ourselves and the work is inspected by the AHJ.
- Flat written quote — no surprise fees. You see the full price before we start.
- Material selection. Black iron, CSST (corrugated stainless steel tubing), or polyethylene for buried runs — chosen based on application and code.
- Installation with proper supports and shutoffs. Every appliance gets its own shutoff valve. CSST runs are bonded per code.
- Pressure test. We pressurize the new line with air or inert gas to the required test pressure and hold it for the required period.
- Inspection. Inspector confirms the work, then the utility relights or activates service.
- Final hookup and leak check. We connect the appliance, light it, and check every connection with electronic detection and soap solution.
Why Hire a Licensed Plumber for Gas Work?
South Carolina law requires gas piping in residences to be installed by a licensed plumber or licensed gas fitter. Beyond the legal requirement, gas work involves:
- Proper sizing — undersized lines starve appliances; oversized lines waste money
- Correct materials — black iron vs. CSST vs. polyethylene depends on location and use
- Code-required shutoffs and unions at every appliance
- Bonding and grounding for CSST per the manufacturer and current code
- Pressure testing to confirm zero leaks before commissioning
- Permits and inspections that are required for resale
A handyman or DIY install that “works” can fail an inspection during a future home sale, void homeowners insurance after a fire, and — most importantly — put your family at risk.
Common Gas Appliance Hookups in the Midlands
- Tankless water heaters (often need a larger gas line than tank units they replace)
- Standby generators (Generac, Kohler, Briggs & Stratton — we run the gas line from the meter to the generator pad)
- Outdoor grills, fire pits, and fire features with shutoff valves
- Pool and spa heaters
- Gas fireplaces and inserts
- Gas water heaters, ranges, and dryers
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit for gas line work?
Yes. Any new gas line, extension, or significant repair in Lexington or Richland County requires a permit and inspection. We handle the permit application as part of every job.
How long does a gas line install take?
A simple appliance hookup with an existing nearby line is usually a half-day. A new run from the meter to a new location can take 1–2 days depending on length and whether we’re going underground or through walls.
Can you convert an electric appliance to gas?
Often yes — if you have gas service to the home. We run the new line and shutoff to the appliance location, and most appliance installers can complete the final connection (or we can).
What’s the difference between CSST and black iron?
Black iron is rigid, threaded steel pipe — durable and traditional. CSST is flexible corrugated stainless steel — faster to install, especially in attics and crawl spaces, but requires proper bonding to current code. Both are approved for use in South Carolina when installed correctly.
Do you work on propane lines too?
Yes. Propane (LP) line work follows similar code with some pressure differences. We install, repair, and test propane systems across the Midlands.
