What does Rinnai error code 11 mean?

Code 11 means your Rinnai tried to light and couldn’t. No flame, no hot water. Nine times out of ten it’s something simple with the gas supply, like a valve that got turned off or a propane tank that ran dry. If the simple stuff checks out, one of the ignition parts inside needs a pro.

The usual causes, in the order we actually find them

  1. Gas supply. Somebody closed a valve during other work, the propane ran out, or the gas service hiccuped. This is the big one, and it’s the one you can check yourself.
  2. Blocked intake or exhaust. Leaves, debris, the occasional critter nest. We see this a lot on outdoor units and lake houses.
  3. A tired igniter or flame rod. These wear out like spark plugs. The unit tries to light and can’t, or lights and can’t prove it.
  4. The gas valve or regulator. Less common, and strictly our department.

What’s safe to check yourself

Is the gas shutoff at the unit open? Are the other gas appliances in the house working? On propane: is there propane? Power-cycle the unit once and let it retry. Then step outside and look at the intake and exhaust for anything blocking them.

Where DIY stops: if the basics check out and code 11 keeps coming back, stop there. Past that point it’s gas components, and that’s licensed work. The unit sitting in lockout is safe. That’s what the lockout is for. And if you ever smell gas: leave the house first, call your gas utility second.

Quick answers

Is error code 11 dangerous?
The code itself, no. It means the unit shut itself down rather than run wrong, which is exactly what you want it to do. The risk would be improvised gas repair. Check the simple stuff, then hand it off.
Why does code 11 keep coming back after I reset it?
Because the cause is still there. Reset just gives the unit another try. It doesn’t refill the propane or clean the flame rod.
Can a power outage cause code 11?
It can. An outage or surge mid-cycle sometimes leaves the unit locked out. One power-cycle and a retry is fair. If it comes back, it wasn’t the outage.
What does a code-11 service call look like?
We check gas pressure and supply, inspect the igniter and flame rod, look over the venting end to end, and test-fire the unit. Most code-11 calls are wrapped up in one visit.
